Event Recap: "Leadership and Public Service Forum"

Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines and Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco spoke with CBS News’s Olivia Gazis last night at an event co-sponsored by Silverado Policy Accelerator and Google. The event, hosted at Google’s D.C. headquarters, was targeted toward summer interns working in public service and national security. The live studio audience included interns from government agencies and organizations including the FBI, CIA, NSA, ODNI, Department of Justice, the Department of Energy, the National Reconnaissance Office, and CBS News, and the event was live-streamed to watch parties of interns around the country. The in-person audience also included leading voices in national security from both the private and public sectors.

In their discussion with Gazis, Director Haines and Deputy A.G. Monaco touched on the some of the major national security questions of the day, including the war in Ukraine, the enforcement of sanctions against Russian oligarchs, the threats posed by the rise in domestic extremism, and the national security implications of deepening political polarization in the United States. Director Haines and Deputy A.G. Monaco also discussed their careers in national security and answered questions submitted by interns about pursuing a career in public service.

"It's hard to beat the extraordinary thing that you get to work on in government," said Director Haines in response to a question about the highlights of her career. "It's the most meaningful work that I've been a part of, and you get the make amazing friends."

The event also featured remarks from Silverado's Co-Founder and Executive Chairman Dmitri Alperovitch, Silverado's Chief of Staff Marc Raimondi, and Google's VP/GM for Chrome Parisa Tabriz.
